Images of St Mary's interior before 1896 restoration
These images pre-date the restoration of the church by Charles Edward Keyser, which began in 1896.
Looking east:
- The walls appear unpainted and white-washed, although this could be due to light exposure on the photograph.
- There is a top-loading boiler with a chimney exiting vertically through the roof.
- An aisle carpet that doesn’t exist after the restoration in 1896-1902.
Looking west:
- A choir (‘minstrel’) gallery runs the width of the church in front of the bell ringing chamber
- The entrance to the pulpit is direct whereas the current steps are angled to accomodate the new choir stall plinth.
The Jacobean Pulpit and it’s canopy are as they are today with the exception of the change to the steps. Some of the lecterns still exist today.
