Copied from Jean Chapman’s collection, these newspaper cuttings vividly recall the atmosphere on the brink of war in September 1939- and the last one expresses the heartfelt relief when Victory in Europe was declared.

This clipping vividly shows the atmosphere of hope- and dread- on Sunday, 3rd September 1939.
From the same paper, page 16 claims "we are ready"- a forlorn hope indeed!
On the same day, the News of the World conveys the atmosphere of being on the brink of war.
One day later- on 4th September 1939- the war started yesterday at 11.00.
Finally, on the last day of six years of war Germany's surrender is announced in this front page.
