Aldermaston’s Triennial Candle Auction for Lease of Church Acre

Since 1815 the 3yr lease of Church Acre has been auctioned by the Church on the renewal of the lease every third year. The auction is by Candle, which entails a nail being placed in the candle and when it falls the final bid is the winner. This form of auction is how we get the saying “to hear a pin drop”.
